‘How do you do a dining table without a formal flower arrangement?’ – here’s everything you need for an organized show, according to Shea McGee
As autumn approaches, we approach the season known for welcoming and celebrating – which means your dining table is about to become the busiest place in your home.
While decorating your table for dinner may feel like second nature right now, you probably don’t want to create a centerpiece that requires fresh flowers for every meal you have or which you accept.
The good news is that there are many ways to create a beautiful dining table without buying formal arrangements every time.
Interior designer Shea McGee recently took to Instagram to share her top tips for decorating dining tables, and they include pieces you probably already have in your home. .

‘I’m often asked how do you style a dining table if it’s not a flower arrangement?’ says Shea, standing in front of a wooden dining table topped with a large display of flowers – with a feeling of falling into it. But there are a few other ways she likes to arrange table decorations that don’t involve a lot of flowers.
Some of the principles I look for when putting together groups at the dining table are usually a group of two and one tall object and one short object. Maybe a larger vase and bowl – a vase that looks good with or without flowers and a bowl that looks good with or without fruit,’ she explains.
Choosing a table decoration is beautiful and very effective – not only does it add visual appeal, but you can use the decoration to display the things you really need to keep on the table. This is especially important if you are hosting and table space is in short supply.
And, featuring a vase as part of your decor means you can add flowers when appropriate without having to change everything else. Victory!

‘Then I’ll look at a set of three, about a pair of lit candles – which look good unlit or lit – and pair them with something lower,’ says Shea, which is great if you have a larger dining table, or just want a large decorative display.
The rule of thirds is important in interior design, and it works perfectly for decorating the dining table. Not only does it give a collected look, but the three sets are a foolproof way to add attention-grabbing decor. Three seems to be the magic number – too many disparate pieces can feel jumbled and jumbled, rather than a cohesive unit.
‘The candles become the focal point, and I put a tray or bowl next to it,’ she adds. The key here is to play with scale – pairing decorations that are tall and short, wide and narrow, will give your dining table decor interest and dimension.
‘It’s a great no-fail way to get a simple dining table look that you don’t have to buy fresh flowers for,’ Shea concludes.
